Residents will get the opportunity to do so, COVID-pending, on July 31 when a load of rescued hens from Let The Ladies Go visits Bathurst hoping to find forever homes.

Around 16 million egg-laying hens are killed every 18 months, according to Animal Justice Party Central West convener Queenie Green, who has been doing her part to help these hens for the last three years.

"At the end of 18 months, their yield of the eggs drops to a point where they're not economically viable anymore," she said.

Let The Ladies Go, based at Mandalong, in the Lake Macquarie area, was established by Tania Daykin to reduce the number of hens killed after their economic life comes to an end.

After hens are nursed to good health, they are transported to towns around NSW to be adopted.

"I have been involved with it for three years, but [Tania's] been going longer than that," Ms Green said.

"She has some co-ordinators in the different zones that she goes to and basically what we do is share it on social media and try to get as many homes as we can for the rescues and it's been really successful so far.

"A lot of people record the chickens when they first get them; seeing dirt and the sunlight and grass for the very first time, it's a really moving experience."

Ms Green has adopted hens herself and said they are great pets, especially for children, and all have their own little personalities.
