On July 1, the NSW Government introduced free lifetime registration for people who adopt a rescue pet from council pounds and animal shelters, and rehoming organisations.
Ms White is the shelter manager at RSPCA Orange and although this change won't affect their branch specifically, she was pleased to know it will have an impact around Orange.
"It's a really good initiative and I think it's really going to encourage prospective pet owners to adopt rather than shopping because there is that reduced fee now," she said.
"With a lot of things, cost is a big thing when it comes to animals because there are so many ongoing costs. I think just even deleting one cost for an animal definitely helps people want to adopt more.
"Currently with our shelter in particular we don't have an in pound facility here at the shelter in our region."
Councils must continue to register eligible pound/shelter animals through the NSW Companion Animals Register. Free registration for these animals does not mean that registration is not required.
The established process of 'flagging' an animal as being purchased from an eligible pound/shelter is required to validate a free registration.
When processing a registration for an eligible pensioner whose pet has been recommended by a vet to not undergo desexing (either temporarily or permanently), select the new "not desexed (not recommended - pensioner)" category. This will allow the eligible pensioner to claim the discounted registration.
