Dr Mallard said he wanted to build on the work done by past Greens councillors, including current retiring Cr Stephen Nugent.

"It's a role I'm definitely keen to fill," he said. "I'm really looking forward to campaigning over the next two months.

"The next few years will be a critical period for Orange and the region as we face increasing challenges, including the impacts of climate change, housing affordability pressures, growing needs for seniors living and care options, and more services for young families."

He said water supply in a city with a growing population would be a key issue for voters.

"We know that it is going to be an issue and climate change is only going to put us more at risk," he said.

He said the removal of trees for the Bloomfield sporting precinct would also be a hot topic.

Dr Mallard is a National Tertiary Education Union organiser who has also worked as a lecturer at Charles Stuart University.

He has organised Central West Greens' campaigns and been on council committees.

Dr Mallard said they had not yet decided whether to run for mayor as well as councillor positions.

Joining him will be number two candidate Haidee Edwards and the third member of the Greens ticket AnneMaree McLaughlin.

Ms Edwards said: "I believe that personal health and the health of the environment go hand in hand, and that council has a responsibility to enhance the wellbeing of the people of Orange."

Mrs McLaughlin said she had been active in supporting services that address disadvantage in the community, and in campaigning to protect the natural environment.

The Greens had to re-set their team after its initial selection to lead the party Melanie McDonell said she had changed her mind in May and decided to run her own independent ticket in the council polls.

The elections to decide Orange's next mayor and 11 councillors will be held on Saturday September 4.
