The Pineapple Express Veteran Community Facebook page revealed last week Glenn Sutton was likely to have no one attend his funeral in Orange on Monday.
"Glenn Sutton is a 69 year old veteran who passed away in Orange recently," it said.
"There are no known family or friends and therefore, at this stage has no one attending his funeral. If anyone is in the area and if state restrictions allow it, could you please attend so he's not alone."
It led to an outpouring of condolences on the page plus support from the City of Orange sub-branch of the RSL and the 1/19 Royal NSW Regiment in Orange who will attend to ensure Mr Sutton is given a fitting farewell.
RSL sub-branch president Chris Colvin said they would provide an RSL service with other services representatives attending.
Mr Colvin said he understood Mr Sutton moved to Orange a few years ago.
He had been living at the Benjamin Short Grove aged care facility in Orange for the past three and a half years.
Mr Colvin said Mr Sutton's plight highlighted the need for more work to be done to assist former soldiers in adjusting and moving back into the regular community after their service.
"We have a lot of veterans who don't fit back into society," he said. "We allow servicemen back into society but we don't train them to live in normal society.
"We've got young diggers out there in Orange who I don't know. I can't help them if I don't know who they are," he said.
Mr Colvin said the RSL was working with governments to obtain funding for programs to assist former service people.
Mr Sutton's funeral is at 11am on Monday at Penhalls funeral home in William Street.
Lyndhurst RSL sub-branch president Charles Jensen said he served with Mr Sutton for 6-7 years in the 1/19 RNSWR.
He said Mr Sutton had been in the army and the army reserve for about 27 years after joining as an apprentice in 1968.
Mr Jensen, who will be outlining Mr Sutton's military career at the funeral, said Mr Sutton was the rank of corporal on discharge.
He said Mr Sutton was sent on overseas deployment to New Zealand on Exercise Tasman Reserve in 1983 and had received the Reserve Force Medal and the Australian Defence Medal.
