A five-year-old boy will undergo surgery after he was hit by a car in the state's west on Sunday afternoon and subsequently airlifted to Newcastle.

The child will have surgery for facial injuries he sustained after being struck by the car, which was being driven by a woman, as he ran across the road on Dalgarno Street in Coonabarabran.
Emergency services were called immediately and the boy was taken to Coonabarabran Hospital before being airlifted to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to Coonabarabran Hospital for mandatory testing.
Inquiries by Orana Mid-Western Police District are underway.
