Mayor Cr Reg Kidd called for CCTV to be installed in the park at the latest council meeting.
Cr Jason Hamling told the meeting he believed funding would be available for the cameras.
As far as I know it is definitely going to be looked at
- Cr Glenn Taylor
Deputy mayor Cr Glenn Taylor raised the issue of park security after seeing one of the council's newly-installed solar light poles was pushed out of the ground earlier this month.
This week Cr Taylor said he wanted council to examine the CCTV plan.
"As far as I know it is definitely going to be looked at," he said.
"It's one option that we're looking at."
Cr Taylor said he was concerned vandals often wore hoodies making them harder to be identified on CCTV.
"It's all going to come down to cost," he said.
"You've got to weigh up whether it's practical."
Cr Taylor said council needed to ensure the lights, playground and other facilities in Matthews Park were as vandal-proof as possible.
He said he was still concerned that the new light poles were too low and vulnerable to vandalism.
Cr Taylor said councillors received an emailed-response from council staff on the poles.
"They said they are 'vandal-resistant', they are not vandal-proof," he said.
Cr Taylor said he inspected the park this week and the vandalised pole had not yet been re-installed.
"The light that was vandalised hasn't been replaced yet. I imagine is not far off," he said.
Cr Taylor said there was always a vandal-element about in the community who could damage public facilities such as the lights.
"99.9 per cent of the population will do the right thing and appreciate the lights there in the park," he said.
Funding for CCTV is not part of $250,000 allocated to upgrading Matthew Park as part of the Future City CBD upgrade project.
Work has started on the project.
It includes a playground, path, picnic tables and chairs and a new bridge across the channel in the park.
