In the past two weeks he has seen the city's biggest snow dump in 40 years, rain and icy winds as he worked to complete the first Indigenous-themed art of the project.

"I'm aiming to finish it tomorrow," he said.

"This is coming along nicely."

Mr Gibbs-O'Neill's work titled Community is being painted on the wall of a Hotel Canobolas garage that fronts the McNamara Street car park.

He said it was three rivers, painted in blue, to reflect the Wiradjuri people, the 'people of the three rivers' the Wambool (Macquarie), Kalari (Lachlan) and Murrumbidgee.

Two circular designs joined by a pathway illustrate past, present and future communities and the importance of sharing knowledge and showing respect.

A circle in the background will illustrate the land and how everything is connected. Mr Gibbs-O'Neill said this would be his only work as part of the Future City program.

He said he had several other commissions he was keen to get started on once Community was finished.

Mr Gibbs-O'Neill recently completed a mural on a wall at Headspace in Orange.

"I did that with about 70 kids. It took a while," he said.

Mr Gibbs-O'Neill said while he was a a proud Nhunngabarra man from Goodooga he was happy to be doing a Wiradjuri work in its land.

He said he was inspired by the legacy of his grandfather, Tex Skuthorpe, a highly-respected Nhunggal man, artist, teacher and author.
