A 1-0 loss to Western United last August brought Aldred's first season with the Roar to a sudden halt and it's a situation the English defender is desperate to avoid repeating against the Reds.

"If there's one sort of motivation you need, that's the taste we had in our mouth when we finished the game against Western United last year," Aldred told AAP.

"We want to go further this time and that's what we said to each other in that change room, going back now, almost 12 months.

"The boys need little motivation but if there is any tinge of motivation you can get, it's definitely from that moment because it was one of frustration and anger and all the different emotions that come with losing finals football."

Aldred has endured a frustrating back end to the season with a niggling hamstring injury that has meant he's featured in just four games over the past two months.

The 30-year-old, who captained Blackpool to an English League Two playoff win at Wembley in 2017, says he'll be ready to go if picked in coach Warren Moon's starting XI.

"It's probably the first time in my career where I've actually been properly injured in a season and it's frustrating but the lads have been brilliant," Aldred said.

"We've seen an influx of young players come and take their opportunity which is good for the football club not just for now but in the future."

Aldred is one of several players brought into the squad by Moon following last weekend's 2-0 loss to Sydney FC along with fellow defenders Macaulay Gillesphey and Jack Hingert while Rahmat Akbari and Golgol Mebrahtu are also in contention.

Adelaide, chasing a first A-League finals win outside South Australia, suffered a major setback when winger Craig Goodwin picked up an injury late in training on Saturday.

The fringe Socceroo, who has scored eight goals in 18 appearances this season, left training in a moon boot and will not travel in a huge blow for coach Carl Veart.

While Goodwin is out, the Reds welcome back Jordan Elsey from suspension while a 10-day break between matches has also allowed Juande and Kusini Yengi to shake off hamstring issues of their own.
