Allan Scott Preston, 43, of Moad Street, ordered a meal at KFC in Orange in February and sat at a table near the service counter.
However, he started yelling at staff once he got the food. He then took the lid off the potato and gravy and threw the container at the employee.
The potato hit the victim in the face causing him immediate pain. The victim was sent home and a manager photographed a red mark on the victim's face. The mark faded overnight.
The assault was captured on CCTV and another employee recognised Preston who was arrested. He told police he got mad because he was not given a bag for the food.
Magistrate David Day fined him $220 in Orange Local Court and placed him on a six-month community correction order.
"He's just a person who works there, he's vulnerable and cannot get out of the firing line of cranky customers like you," Mr Day said.
Preston was unrepresented and said he couldn't communicate with the victim.
