Essential Energy initially reported 1724 homes and businesses stretching from the eastern side of the city to Lewis Pondswere without power from 4.19pm.
A spokesman said it would be several hours before power could be restored.
"Approximately 2000 customers in the Orange area are currently experiencing an unplanned power outage as a result of powerlines being brought down by storm activity on Ophir Road, Orange," he said.
"Essential Energy crews responded immediately and are currently working to isolate the fault and restore power.
"We expect to have all customers back on supply by 9pm this evening."
A further 30 properties just west of Orange on The Escort Way also lost power just six minutes earlier.
Further outages were reported near Borenore (five customers) and Molong (55 customers) around the same time.
A severe thunderstorm warning for large hailstones and heavy rainfall was issued by the Bureau of Meteorology at 3.16pm for areas including Orange.
It said slow moving storms were bringing localised heavy falls and possible hail.
However, in the first hour of the storm just 3.4 millimetres of rain had been recorded at the Orange Airport weather station.
