Matthew John White, 33, of Bathurst Road, was issued a firearms prohibition order on December 14 and police stopped and searched him in Nunns Avenue at 4.45pm on February 3 this year.

Although nothing was found on him during the search, police were granted access to his home and found a shortened firearm on his bed and cannabis on the bedside table.

Magistrate David Day said White was subject to three Community Correction Orders, one of which was for drug supply and another was for possession of ammunition and explosives.

"There's no purpose for having shortened firearms other than committing crimes," Mr Day said.

"I think people have been educated enough in this court to not even try to persuade me of a purpose.

"The fact there are still shortened weapons in the community is of some concern."

Police were granted a search warrant at 7.17pm and found two bags of drugs in a clothes dryer in the laundry. One bag contained 49.3 grams of cannabis and the other contained 29.8 grams of methamphetamine.

Police found more drugs in the bedroom including two bags of cannabis, one weighing 8.5 grams and another weighing 23.3 grams as well as 8.9 grams of methamphetamine.

In total, the police found 81.1 grams of cannabis and 38.73 grams of methamphetamine, as well as the shortened firearm and 30 rounds of ammunition. They also seized mobile phones, electronic storage devices and two laptops.

White told police he had the shortened firearm for a long time and it was for protection. He said it was loaded with a "less than lethal" salt cartridge, although he admitted possession of the ammunition.

He said the meth and cannabis was for personal use and he said he used 0.5 grams of meth and one gram of cannabis a day.

He denied any knowledge of the drugs that were found in the clothes dryer and denied supplying drugs although he later pleaded guilty to relevant charges.

Mr Day gave White a two-year jail sentence with a 22-month non-parole period until December 3, 2022 for possession of a shortened firearm, acquiring a firearm while subject to a prohibition order, possession of ammunition without holding a licence and deemed supply of methamphetamine.

Mr Day also convicted White of possession of the cannabis and placed him on a two-year CCO.

He also issued new two-year CCOs for breaches of the prior orders.

Solicitor Gerry Stapleton said White has already been in custody since February 3 and he spent the first two weeks in quarantine, which he found difficult.

"He had a desire to hand the firearm in but since there was not an amnesty at the time he said he thought he would be charged," Mr Stapleton said.
