It allows entrants to paint any vision, including portrait, landscape or abstract, and use any medium including oil, acrylic, watercolour, mixed media, or pencil.
Each artist can enter up to four different paintings in any combination of the four main categories: Open, First Nations Prize for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander artists, landscape and student.
There will be a two-tiered process to select the finalists followed by a further round to decide the winners.
Prize director and founder Bob Stephens said he was thrilled with the reaction to the awards.
"Australian artists have struggled for visibility over the last 12 months and these awards give them a platform for exposure and commercial opportunity," he said.
Entries can be made via the prize website and close on July 1 and the public exhibition will be in Canberra from September 18.
