Tuesday night's council meeting was told buildings had been vandalised, office equipment was strewn around, there was long grass and the running rail was falling down at the former Highlands Paceway off Perc Griffith Way on the eastern edge of Orange.
Council has called for a report into what plans the Orange Harness Racing Club has for the site and what was happening with $200,000 the council had budgeted over 10 years toward the club's operations.
There's posts down, two of the buildings doors have been smashed in, there's office equipment and paper all over the floor
- Cr Reg Kidd, Orange mayor
It was suggested council begin talks with the Orange Kart Club, which has its track near the trotting track site, about how it could potentially use some of the 'derelict' facility.
Mayor Cr Reg Kidd said the site had become 'pretty derelict out there' since the trotting meetings stopped a few years ago.
"There's posts down, two of the buildings doors have been smashed in, there's office equipment and paper all over the floor. I'm really concerned that its only a matter of time before somebody does get in there and puts a match to the paper and the buildings will all go up in flames," he said.
"It's just vandalism. We need to barricade it off or bulldoze what's there, or make a decision pretty quickly before we have an accident or a fire."
Deputy mayor Cr Glenn Taylor said with funding help there could be room for the kart club to expand its track into the trots facility. He asked for council to begin talks with them.
"The work they've done is amazing. They really do bring a lot of money into the town. It's well worth us supporting them," he said.
