The 'Bin Buster Challenge' is set to start late this month with the close of business on Friday the last day to sign up.
Across the six-week challenge period, participating households will be provided with free resources and tools to assist in waste reduction and resource recovery.
They will be encouraged to challenge themselves and avoid single-use items, maximise the use of their recycling and food and garden waste bins, and reduce the amount of waste entering the red lid general waste bin.
Orange Mayor Reg Kidd believes it's a good opportunity to families to learn easy lessons in waste management.
"We have a pioneering system of waste management in Orange that includes red, yellow and green-lidded bins," Cr Kidd said.
That lets us recycle items that can be used again, and also turn food and garden waste in industrial quantities of compost."
