Orange City Council on Tuesday night voted for work to go ahead with revamping McNamara and Byng streets and Lords Place.
The pedestrian-friendly plans include median strips, festoon lighting, new trees and tree removal, pop-up shops plus changing the Byng Street and Lords Place roundabout into a single lane roundabout.
The plans include moving the Robertson Park taxi rank to Summer Street however cab drivers have expressed opposition to the plan.
Council was told discussions would continue with the Orange Taxi Co-op and drivers to find a solution.
The works are set to start soon.
Council also backed a masterplan to upgrade Glenroi Oval into a more user-friendly park with the planting of 200 trees and improving sports facilities.
The plan will go on public exhibition.
Council also supported rezoning plans for smaller block sizes at a new housing estate in Shiralee and for maps and an app to be created to show people where defibrillators are available across Orange in the case of people suffering heart attacks.
