But on Saturday in a local derby against Cavaliers, that's what City's Blake Weymouth did.
The rock solid batsmen led the side for the first time in his career, an occurrence that seemed to be a case of when... not if.
It doesn't look as though Ed Morrish will leave the Warriors anytime soon but if Weymouth is still part of the side when he does, he'd be the obvious choice to captain the squad.
Orange City is in good shape ahead of its day two meeting with Cavaliers as they're 1/9 chasing 180.
IN-FORM SIDE FIRMS INTO FAVOURITISM
There isn't a Bathurst Orange Inter District Cricket betting market but if there was, Rugby Union would just about be favourites to take out the title.
The Ryan Peacock-led outfit continued its unthinkable run of dominance with a T20 Royal Hotel Cup victory on Friday, effortlessly knocking over City by 30 runs after a top-tier batting display from the skipper.
Peacock said after the game that he feels his group is 'as good as any' in the region and the statistics back that up.
No one would have picked us to do what we're doing.
- Ryan Peacock.
"No one would have picked us to do what we're doing," he said.
The Dogs haven't lost a game since well before the Christmas break and even though they're in a spot of bother ahead of day two of their final-round clash against Bathurst City, they looked primed for a deep run.
Orange City and St Pat's Old Boys are obviously well in the mix, the latter being declared by many as the team to beat this summer. But, based on form alone, how can you go past Rugby Union?
CITY COLTS IN STORE FOR SHOCKING LOSS
Not many pundits would have picked Kinross to win their final-round match against City Colts but after one day of action, they'd be odds on to do so.
The students were all out for 125 in the opening innings which on paper, didn't seem to be enough.
But, as we've come so accustomed to seeing, City Colts promptly collapsed amid a run chase.
Dave Sellers (16) was the only batsmen to crack double digits, the side losing 7/45 in a disaster of an innings.
Young gun, Mac Webster (3/11) had a strong day at the office as he sent Russell Gardner packing, something most bowlers haven't been able to do this summer.
Josh Toole will swing the willow at the resumption of play, his side needing 81 runs to surpass the total set by the men in navy.
TAYLOR IN LEAD FOR MOST WICKETS
St Pat's Old Boys' bowling attack wouldn't be what it is without Mitch Taylor.
The fast bowler took five wickets in his side's first day of action against Centrals as he re-claimed the wicket tally from Rugby Union's Hugh McIntyre.
Not only has his body of work this season been sensational, but he's amid a scintillating run of form, taking 19 wickets in his last five outings.
There's a few names on in that that you'd look towards in the semi-finals and he's one of them. They resume play against Centrals on Saturday.
COUGHLAN CLOSES YEAR IN STYLE
They might be a long shot to make the semi finals but Bathurst City has benefited greatly from skipper Joey Coughlan.
The all-rounder put 56 on the board in a crucial dig against Rugby Union before picking up the ball and dismissing Tim Powell for a duck after lunch.
