Police were alerted after a man was seen allegedly assaulting another man, who was lying on the ground of Johnson Street, Forbes, about 4am on January 23.
Officers from Central West Police District attended and commenced CPR before NSW Ambulance paramedics arrived; however, efforts to revive the man failed and he died at the scene.
The man has not been formally identified but is believed to be aged in his 40s.
A crime scene was established and local detectives, assisted by the State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the man's death.
Following inquiries, police arrested a 30-year old man at a home on Farnell Street, Forbes, about 8.45pm.
He was taken to Parkes Police Station where he was charged with murder.
The man was refused bail and appeared in Dubbo Local Court on Sunday, where he was again refused bail to appear in Orange Local Court on Monday.
