On Monday afternoon the average cost for unleaded fuel in Orange was 114.5 cents per litre, which compared favourably to that of Parkes (128 cents per litre), Blayney (124), Dubbo (119.9) and Lithgow (119.8).
The average price in Bathurst was slightly more expensive at 115.7 cents per litre.
However like Orange, the average price in Bathurst had fluctuated only slightly in the four weeks prior while a number of other centres had experienced steady increases, particularly Lithgow and Dubbo.
Since December 17 the average price of unleaded fuel rose more than seven cents per litre in Lithgow and more than five cents per litre in Dubbo.
We have seen an upward trend in the central west but the prices are still pretty stable.
- NRMA spokesperson Rebecca Page
"We have seen an upward trend in the central west but the prices are still pretty stable, particularly in places like Bathurst and Orange," NRMA spokesperson Rebecca Page said.
"They've had fluctuations of a few cents per litre here and there, and that upward trend is a follow-on from the increase in Sydney prices, the average price in Sydney [on Monday was] 127.6 cents per litre.
"The good news for motorists in the central west is that they shouldn't expect to see those kinds of highs that we see in Sydney."
However, Ms Page did say the NRMA expects petrol prices to continue following that upward trend in line with metropolitan prices.
"We do expect those prices to continue increasing slightly but the biggest message we give to drivers is to make sure they do their own research and find the cheapest price because they do vary," she said.
She urged motorists to check the government and NRMA's Fuel Check app and website for live prices which, at the same time on Monday, revealed Orange's cheapest fuel on offer was a full five cents per litre cheaper than the average.
Both the 7-11 on Molong Road and the Northern Distributor's BP were offering unleaded fuel at just 109.5 cents per litre, with the most expensive option sitting at more than 20 cents more expensive per litre.
The cheapest option in Bathurst was 105.5 cents per litre while in Dubbo, the best price on offer was 109.9.
According to the Fuel Check app, Orange's diesel prices compare favourably with other major centres as well, with prices ranging between 109.9 and 125.9 cents per litre.
In Bathurst the price of diesel was between 107.9 and 122.9 cents per litre while in Dubbo it ranged from 115.9 and 130.9 cents per litre.
