The mounds of dirt at a site opposite Dudley Private Hospital on March Street have laid largely unused for several years after the BMX track proved unpopular.

Councillors called for its removal due to it being an eyesore.

The site was flattened last year and now there are plans to turn it into a car park.

However, following requests from a community group in Glenroi some of the dirt was taken to Glenroi Oval.

Council's acting CEO Scott Maunder said the community had shaped the dirt into their own BMX track which was now proving popular for young people in the area.

He said it was part of work on the whole Glenroi Oval area following community meetings.

"We did the consultation with the community and the police," he said.

That has also included the removal of an old toilet block that was little-used and a fence at the Glenroi Community Centre.

Mr Maunder said further funding had been allocated in council's budget for more work at the site.

"It's a gradual upgrade of the facility," he said.

Glenroi Youth Hub project leader Sarkis Achmar said locals had welcomed the new track for bikes.

"It's definitely getting use," he said.

Mr Achmar said work was also underway for a basketball court next to the Community Centre building.

The upgrades for the area also include new five-metre-highmotion-sensor solar lights along a pathway into the oval from Garema Road.

CCTV cameras have also been installed as part of a federal government-funded $470,000 plan to improve safety in five areas of Orange announced last week.

Mayor Cr Reg Kidd said the areas, including Glenroi Oval, had identified in a community safety audit which had included police, business and community members plus council committees and non-government organisations.

"Lighting, limited surveillance and low use of poorly lit areas were highlighted as major contributing factors for increased anti-social behaviour in these areas," he said.

At a council meeting last month Cr Kidd said a car park on the old BMX track site would ease parking shortages at the private hospital and help people using the Anzac Park facilities.
