The BoM says the existing weather station at the Orange Regional Airport plus automatic stations at the Orange Agricultural Institute on Forest Road, and stations near Orange are sufficient.
There have been calls from Orange mayor Reg Kidd, Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange president Neil Jones and weather-checking residents of the city to have a second gauge in the centre of town after noticing differences in the amount of rain recorded.
However, a BoM spokesman said the existing facilities were OK.
"Orange Airport is a suitable location for an automatic weather station," he said. "The relatively flat terrain at the site means there are no obstructions such as buildings and trees that can impact weather station recordings."
He said the airport site was also valuable for providing weather information for the aviation industry.
The spokesman said the facilities provided a "good representation" of the weather. "This provides sufficient information for forecasters."
