Last year's State Challenge was abandon after a dust storm rolled through Dubbo mid-match, in a summer that was affected by dusty and smoky conditions from the drought and bushfires.

Once again the State Challenge has been scheduled at Dubbo, with Taylor one of three Bathurst talents - the others being Rupert Begg and Mark Sheather - selected in the under 14s South West team.

Taylor's selection in the team comes on the back of an impressive performance for the under 14s Central West team at last month's NSW Youth Championships.

"The Youth Championships, they pick the team off the carnival there but they also look at the players at other rep carnivals too," Taylor explained.

"At the start of the Youth Championships I set a few goals, such as 200 runs for the tournament. I ended up on 145 runs but in the first game I scored 65 which was pretty good and the next game I got 39 not out.

"I was pretty happy with them. Then I got a few low scores in the T20 matches, but I'm still pretty happy with 145 runs."

The Kelso High student - who plays his club cricket at Rugby Union - said it's "exciting" to be selected in the South West team for the State Challenge.

"That was one of my goals, to make the Central West team and then the State Challenge after that," he said.

"I played in it last year, so I thought I'd have a chance of making it if I do well for Central West."

Taylor said he's look forward to playing with his Central West teammates in Begg and Sheather in the South West team.

"It'll be pretty good to be playing with Rupert," the 13-year-old said.

"He's a really good player. There was a three day carnival for the rep at the start of the season and he got a 170 runs and his lowest score was 48 in that. It feels pretty good to be in a team with him, because he scored a lot of runs.

"Mark is a pretty good bowler as well. He's got a lot of wickets in the Central West team as well."

Dubbo will host the competition from January 18-21.
