During our visits, we have always spent a day in Milthorpe and the surrounding area.
This year we were disappointed to find that 80 percent of the shops in Milthorpe were closed when we ventured there on Thursday, December 30, so the bulk of the hundreds of dollars that we would usually spend remained in our pockets.
Throughout 2020, Australians have been assailed with a constant barrage of reminders about the importance of supporting small businesses in our communities, but It's hard to do that when they won't open, even during peak holiday periods
I now believe that small business is not doing it as tough as it makes out, but rather many have adopted a `whinge and win' approach, earning them much support from government on the one hand while, on the other, expecting their customers to attend their premises and hand-over their cash at the proprietors' convenience.
To avoid being criticised for speaking from a "glass house", I have encountered the same attitude and behaviour in our locality near Tathra on the south coast, where customers, including visitors, are often treated as a necessary inconvenience.
We hope that Milthorpe will not wind-up in the same place.
