With the heat and blustery winds wreaking havoc on the large 2020 open field, Campbell, a Duntryleague member, rattled off four consecutive bogeys on the final four holes of his opening round on Saturday to record a round of 74, but then backed it up with 69 off the stick to emerge triumphant following Sunday's second round at the Wentworth Golf Club.
Campbell's 36-hole total of 143 was good enough to edge early leader and Duntry clubmate Craig Stojanovic by two strokes, his 145 off the stick good enough for second place.
"To shoot four over (on day 1) was quite disappointing," Campbell said in the post-Open ceremony.
"But I got it going early on Sunday and managed to hang in there and got home by a couple, which is nice."
The self-appointed "elite athlete" was in good spirits as he notched up another win for 2020, following his success at Duntryleague's 72-hole championship.
Wentworth professional, Todd Brakenridge was delighted that 235 people turned out to play the weekend event.
"It ran smoothly, no rain, no playoffs or crazy delays," he said. "All in all it went about as well as you could ask for."
With coronavirus hitting clubs around the state hard this year, Brakenridge was just pleased so supported the event.
"We had a great turnout from visitors," he said.
"Golf tourism is getting back to normality and it was nice to have the event towards the end of the year. It is good to see people playing different courses and supporting different clubs."
The golf pro had one particular shout out as well, that of the event sponsors.
"Just a massive thanks to Epiroc," he finished.
"It was nice to have a major sponsor at just a month's notice and for them to hang on through Covid."
Rounding out the top four finishers from the weekend were Wenty's Troy Swain (147) and Steve Bray (148).
