A website affiliated to Iran's state TV has reported on its Twitter account that Ms Moore-Gilbert, an Australian academic and former All Saints' College student, has been released as part of an exchange for three Iranians jailed abroad.

"An Iranian businessman and two Iranian citizens who were detained abroad on baseless charges were exchanged for a dual national spy named Kylie Moore-Gilbert, who worked for the Zionist regime," the Young Journalist Club news website said.

Ms Moore-Gilbert, a specialist in Middle East politics at the University of Melbourne, was detained in Iran in September 2018.

She was given a 10-year sentence for espionage.

International pressure on Iran to secure Moore-Gilbert's release has escalated in recent months following reports that her health was deteriorating during long stretches of solitary confinement and that she had been transferred to Qarchak Prison, east of Tehran.

Ms Moore-Gilbert's family and friends also banded together in a campaign, FreeKylieMG, calling on the Australian Government to do more to secure her release, including a Sunday morning run around the Macquarie River in September to show their support.

At the time, Ms Moore-Gilbert's former All Saints' school friend Rosie Cheung described her as a "very dear" friend.

"Kylie has always been the most supportive friend you could've ever asked for," Ms Cheung said.

"This was a way of supporting her and letting her know that we really love her and miss her and that she's not alone. We're there for her."
