Council will lodge a formal biennial application for the proclamation of part-day public holidays from 8.30am to 7pm on Tuesday May 4, 2021, and Tuesday May 17, 2022.

If granted, the public holiday would impact a "portion of the township of Yeoval".

Advice was sought from NSW Treasury regarding applications under the Public Holidays Act 2010 for the declaration of local public holidays and local event days.

The act permits the minister for the public service and employee relations, Aboriginal affairs and the arts to declare a local public holiday, or a local event day, for the whole or part of the council's local government area.

This may be limited to a specific location in the council's area, such as the boundaries of a particular town or a police district.

To attract the best travelling displays and exhibitors the Yeoval Annual Show is on mid-week, held between the Wellington and Orange shows.

Regarding the decision to request a partial day off rather than a full day, the council's agenda for its November 24 meeting stated: "It should be noted that in 2013 the Australian Hotels Association (NSW), on behalf of its members, submitted an expression of concern regarding the impact of a full local public holiday due to businesses being required to pay employees extended penalty rates.

"It was ... decided by council in 2013 to 2019 that a part-day public holiday from 8.30am to 7pm was the best option based on the advice."

If the part-day public holiday is granted, council anticipated Yeoval Central School would close for the day and St Columba's Catholic School would continue to run the standard bus lines.

According to the NSW Department of Industrial Relations, there are "a small number of local public holidays and local event days that are declared from time to time in regional and rural NSW".

In a submission to council the principal of Yeoval Central School, Nicole Bliss, backed the proposal.

She said teaching staff work at the show as gate operators and judges and also display animals and produce with students.
