Up to that point he'd progressed from strumming a tennis racket to playing a rickety old five string guitar, but this was something else again.
"There was a hippie named Tiger Bobbin, and dad was in the pub and gave his violin to Tiger in return for the old Les Paul copy and a Coronet amplifier," Mr O'Donnell said.
Mr O'Donnell went on to play in a band with his brother Andy, and another with his wife Kellie, but this week heralds the first time the three of them have been in the same place long enough to put together a proper show.
"Andy moved to Orange from the South Coast, so instead of just getting together on the coast at Christmas, we've been able to do something we've always wanted to do."
The trio has a new CD out and is in final rehearsals for concerts at Orange Civic Theatre on November 19 and 20, at which they'll perform new originals and covers.
