The current principal, Scott Paterson, will leave the school at the end of the year.
"The Canobolas Rural Technology High School Principal will take up a position at a Wagga Wagga high school next year," a NSW Education Department spokesperson said.
"Recruitment action is being finalised to fill the substantive principal position."
It is believed Mr Paterson will transfer to Mt Austin High School and become the deputy principal.
Before taking the principal's job at Canobolas Rural Technology High School, Mr Paterson worked from 2016 to 2018 at the education's department's Leadership and High Performance Directorate in Sydney.
Mr Paterson has also worked in various roles at Brisbane Waters Secondary College and Wyong High School.
Mr Paterson's departure is one of a number of upcoming changes at the school, which has 660 students.
The school advised parents in October via its Facebook page that a school development review would be undertaken.
"From 19-23 October an external team of educational experts are coming to CRTHS to conduct an intensive review of school programs, quality teaching and community engagement," the school's post said.
"The purpose of this review is to provide information for planning into the future and to guide and support educational excellence.
"As part of its preparation for the development of its 2021-2024 School Plan, the Canobolas Rural Technology High School principal invited an external review of their existing initiatives, strategies and school improvement practices."
The school community was asked to complete a survey.
The findings of the review are currently being considered.
Canobolas Rural Technology High School was established in 1967 on the eastern boundary of Orange.
A high performance athletes program called Canobolas High Performance Athletes Program (CHPA) is a fundamental part of the school.
