A NSW Police spokeswoman said a 24-year-old man had been arrested at the scene and was later charged.
She said he had been refused bail to appear in Orange Local Court on Monday.
The spokeswoman said police would allege the man got into the cab at the Lords Place taxi rank.
She said it was alleged the passenger pulled a knife on the driver at the corner of Prince and Anson streets about 1am.
Other taxi drivers and police went to the scene where an altercation occurred.
She said the man had been charged with robbery while armed with an offensive weapon, assaulting police and a breach of bail.
