But when they look into their crystal ball they see a main street that is "sophisticated and stylish".
Canowindra locals, meanwhile, view their town centre as "part of a historic village", and wish to maintain "the nostalgic feeling of the main street".
These key points emerged following consultation and drop-in sessions held in August by urban design companies Sala4D from Orange and King&Campbell from Port Macquarie on behalf of Cabonne Council.
Community members were invited to offer suggestions and shape ideas about creating more attractive and functional spaces.
According to council the "consultation sessions identified the values of the community to ensure the project effectively adds value for the community".
The companies are returning to Molong and Canowindra next week to display their findings and suggestions for revitalised town centres.
Locals will be able to ask questions about the companies' results.
Aside from embracing its historic charms, the people of Canowindra said they wanted to feel "welcome, safe and comfortable" when in and around town.
The papers outlining the suggested changes to achieve these visions will go to the council meeting on October 27.
The plan is to put these papers on public display from October 28.
They will remain on display for 21 days.
