The local man, who has only been at work in his current medium for the past decade, took on other artists at Mudgee's Sculptures in the Garden exhibition and won the James Loneragan Artistic Merit Acquisition Prize.

Mr Kasper picked up the $5,000 award for his work 'Symmetry' - a piece which judges described as "elegant and peaceful".

It will now go on permanent display at the new Mudgee Hospital.

"It very slowly turns in the wind," Mr Kasper said of his piece.

"It doesn't need much breeze so there's always something happening (with it). It's always a bit different."

Mr Kasper explained that most of his kinetic sculptures were designed to replicate the movement of a yacht's sails which he used to enjoy watching when he had a boat of his own.

Sculptures in The Garden will run every day from 10am - 4pm until October 25.
