Instead he has called for a greater focus on water saving rules to ensure people continue to be waterwise.
The call comes as a Central Western Daily poll of readers has found 78 per cent of people are in favour of keeping restrictions, currently at Level 2.
I think it would be a retrograde step to abandon the restrictions.
- Neil Jones, president ECCO
Neil Jones, the president of the Environmentally Concerned Citizens of Orange, said it would be wrong to free up water use even though our water storage level is increasing.
Orange City councillor Scott Munro has argued the restrictions should be lifted to give residents a break from the drought and 10 months of tough Level 5 restrictions.
Mr Jones said he was surprised at Cr Munro's call. "I couldn't believe what I was hearing to be quite honest," he said.
"I think it would be a retrograde step to abandon the restrictions. The issue is under Level 2 water restrictions residents have a pretty good go. It's only three to three-and-a-half years ago we were at 100 per cent [storage capacity].
Mr Jones said instead of focussing on restrictions the community should focus on ways to save water use.
"Given our growth and everything that has occurred we need to remember water saving practices."
He said that included people having rainwater tanks on their property where possible.
Council offers a rebate, ranging from $100-$750 depending on the tank size and how it's installed, to home owners and businesses to encourage them.
The Rainwater Tank Rebate Application Form is on the council's website.
