The relationship between the 33-year-old man and the woman ended two weeks before an argument broke out about his refusal to leave the house on March 22.
During the argument, the victim picked up a piece of wood and pointed it at him but the man took it off her and swung it at her head before leaving.
The woman then phoned the police and locked the doors and placed items behind them so they would make a noise if the man tried to re-enter the house.
About 4.30am on March 23 the woman heard a loud bang at the back door and the man came into her room, yelled at her and assaulted her.
The woman managed to get away through the back door and ran down the street before contacting police that night.
The man was given an 18-month community-based custodial sentence for intimidation with a requirement he abstain from drugs and alcohol and attend rehabilitation, he was also given a 12-month community-based custodial sentence for the assault.
