The woman is a year-12 student at James Sheahan Catholic High School and was on a school excursion at Mount Canobolas when she slipped and rolled down the embankment about 150 metres from the falls.

State Emergency Service and Central West Police District crews conducted a "vertical rescue" and extracted her just after 4.45pm and she was taken to Orange hospital.

James Sheahan Catholic High School principal Peter Meers has expressed his gratitude to emergency services who he said, did an amazing job at responding to the accident.

"The excursion was planned within the final week of formal schooling of Year 12," Mr Meers said.

Mr Meers expressed his support and concern for the student and her family and has spoken with the student's parents and said she is recovering well.

He said staff also acted promptly and professionally in supporting the student whilst emergency services treated her for injuries and organised the challenging task of evacuating her from the accident site.

Mr Meers said the school's focus was now on supporting the injured student, her family, and any other students who may have been impacted by the accident.

A NSW Ambulance media spokesperson said emergency services were called at about 1pm, with eight crews called in expectation of a several-hour extraction.

The spokesperson said the woman was taken to hospital with what were reported to be minor injuries

Federal Falls is a 90-minute to two hour walk from the car park at Mount Canobolas.
