Mark Anthony Drady, of Austral Street, Sunny Corner, was stopped while driving in Frederica Street for a random breath test on May 23, returning a negative result.
Later testing showed the 51-year-old had traces of methamphetamine and cannabis in his body.
Drady, who represented himself in Orange Local Court last Monday, said he'd never been pulled over for driving unlicensed or disqualified.
"I know it's wrong what I'm doing," he said.
Magistrate David Day said while due to his location Drady's "need for a license is high", but he said his record of driving with drugs "didn't help" him.
