Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.25pm on Sunday following the activation of the automatic fire alarm system in the building.
Fire and Rescue NSW Orange Station Officer Matthew Jeffery said three fire trucks, police and paramedics attended the scene.
"Entry was gained on the ground level and there was smoke and the smell of burning," he said.
"Three separate alarms had activated on the ground level and we were able to pinpoint that it was food stuffs in a microwave that had caught fire.
"It had the potential to be a lot worse."
Station Officer Jeffery said while the lower floor of the building is used by an Orange church for administrative purposes, nobody was living in the building at the time.
"It's [the fire] currently under [police] investigation regarding the illegal entry," he said.
"We're not sure if the fire was started with a criminal intent."
Firefighters were on scene for two hours and used a thermal imaging camera to check if there were any other hot spots in the premises.
Station Officer Jeffery said damage from the fire was minimal, however, there had been some previous vandalism inside the premises.
Lords Place was partially closed to traffic during the incident and there were no evacuations at neighbouring buildings.
