However, the coronavirus restrictions at the beginning of the pandemic meant the scheme experienced a decline of 17 per cent in return volumes across the network.

A NSW Environment Protection Authority spokesperson said as restrictions eased, the volume of containers returned is back to normal levels.

"Orange residents are enthusiastic contributors to this success with more than 28 million containers returned through its two local return points to date," he said.

"This includes more than 17.2 million containers through the reverse vending machine at North Orange and over 10.9 million containers at the reverse vending machine located in Glenroi."

The spokesperson added the health and wellbeing of participants, staff and return point operations has been a primary focus in these difficult times.

"The latest updates and advice from government in relation to COVID-19 have been closely monitored," he said.

"Return and Earn will continue to follow government recommendations to ensure the safest environment possible."

The spokesperson pointed out a touch-free recycling option for returns at the reverse vending machines but people still have to touch their containers.

The scheme has also helped raise more than $10.4 million for charities and not-for-profits via donations and revenue.

Can Assist is the current local partner on the Orange reverse vending machines.

Previously, Ronald McDonald House Orange and Orange Public School were listed as local donation partners.

The machines are busiest over weekends with Saturdays the peak day for returns and Thursdays the least busy day of the week.

Most cans, bottles, cartons and juice boxes between 150 millilitre to three litres are accepted, however they must be empty, in good condition and have the label attached.

Milk containers, glass wine bottles, glass spirit bottles, juice bottles over one litre and cordial bottles aren't accepted by can still go into the recycling bin.
