As part of its latest budget, Orange City Council decided to increase its spending on new playground construction for the next two years. The Council will spend $360,000 a year for the next two years.
Orange mayor Reg Kidd said the extra funds will let 3 new playgrounds be built and two existing playgrounds to be upgraded.
"When new housing estates are built, spaces are set aside for local neighbourhood parks, so we already have a list of the best places for playground equipment to be installed," Cr Kidd said.
"What we want to hear about now is what the community thinks, to help develop a priority list."
Orange City Council sports and recreation committee chair Jason Hamling is calling on local residents to have their say.
"The best way to get these new playgrounds built is to start with the short-list," Cr Hamling said.
"The good news is we'll also have another $360,000 to spend on playgrounds next financial year and will look to build the same number of projects then."
"We also want to hear if there are any parks that should be added to future lists for a playground."
The current short-list is:
- Park in Webb Street
- Park in Sullivan Circuit
- Frost Park in Austin Street
- Larance Park at the corner of Sunny South Crescent & Maguire Avenue
- Ridley Oval in Glenroi Avenue
- Jaeger Reserve in Clinton Street
- Nelson Park in Gardiner Road to Namatjira Crescent
- Sophie Drive Reserve in Sophie Drive
As well as new playgrounds, some extra equipment is to be added to upgrade Dorothy Cutler Park between Jonathan Road and Valencia Drive.
