St Vincent de Paul Society northwest regional director Phil Donnan said most people are unaware of the homelessness magnitude.

"Being homeless is not those on the streets, but also includes people who are couch surfing, sleeping in their cars or in caravan parks," he said.

"People sleeping rough is just the tip of the iceberg.

"With the coronavirus pandemic and how general people are feeling isolated, it gives a taste to what a homeless person experiences everyday."

The 2016 Census, the most recent figures available, indicate Orange had 128 homeless people and in the Calare electorate at the time more than 3,000 people are waiting for social housing.

Mr Donnan also said the government assistance of JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments have helped people.

"We are pleased the payments will be continuing to help those who financially need it most because otherwise people will fall back on their sense of security of family and friends," he said.

Mr Donnan added the organisation and volunteers are doing the best they can to provide assistance to those in need.

"On a referral basis, we provide emergency accommodation, food and financial assistance if anyone is struggling," he said.

"We are anticipating to start the Vinnies Van in Orange as soon as possible but we haven't confirmed a date yet.

"We have also seen an influx of volunteers at the Orange store who are ready to help others during this time and it's very encouraging to see."

Mr Donnan added the store is still accepting donations from the community.

"People are still able to donate their items in store and it will have to go through a 48 hour quarantine process before it hits the shelves," he said.

"We have been cleaned out of our winter stock and we're looking for any winter items of clothing, blankets and doonas people are able to donate."
