According to the Emus' fullback Jamil Khalfan, that's been the key to the first-grade success throughout the first two weeks of the Blowes Clothing Cup competition as the men in green have chalked up a pair of away wins to kick-off the 2020 season.
First it was Forbes, then it was the defending champion Bulldogs and now, Emus will look to knock of cross-town rivals Orange City as they shoot for their 13th successive win over Viv Paasi's Lions in the club's home opener.
"The way we've started this season is reflective of our culture and where we are as a club," Khalfan said.
"We really stepped up during COVID and made sure we had a pre-season and I think that's showed in the last two games."
While Emus' 12-game winning streak over City is an undeniable narrative entering this game, Khalfan knows his side can't get caught up in any storylines and will approach the contest with a business as usual mentality.
"It's going to be the same old mentality for us," he said.
"We've got to look at ourselves and look at our depth. it's a good chance for our club to take the limelight in our first home game of the season."
The men in green will be without team leader Nigel Staniforth which is admittedly a blow to the roster. However, Khalfan's more than confident in the overall ability of the roster, starting in the centre position.
"Lachie Harris is there at 13 and he's brought good leadership," he said. "He's yet to make strides in the competition but he's one to watch."
Khalfan backs the side's personnel and the talent throughout the starting side but knows the players need to make a conscious effort to be more switched on on Saturday. "We need to be clinical in the first half of each half," he said.
Endeavour Oval is the destination for a 3.15pm kick-off.
