Karl Sibley, 27, of Kent Avenue, was driving along Autumn Street about 9.15pm on April 4 when he was stopped by police for a random breath test.
The police officers decided to search the car and found seven mdma tablets inside a satchel that was in the passenger's footwell.
When asked what the pills were Sibley said "it's ecstasy for personal use".
Police also found 10 white capsules inside a shoe in the boot of the vehicle. They were also mdma.
Solicitor Martin Zanolla said all the drugs were meant for Sibley's personal use and he was generally considered to be a man of good standing who has worked with a drug and alcohol service.
"It's a significant amount of the prohibited substance, we concede that, he purchased that amount because it's more economical," Mr Zanolla said.
Magistrate David Day fined Sibley a total of $440 for having possession of the illicit drugs.
