Orange City Council has now launched a free monthly program for residents to stay in touch.

The Connect-a-Kit tool is aimed to make sure older residents communicate with each other, keep fit and challenge the mind.

Orange mayor Reg Kidd said the program is a great way for people to battle the blues during this difficult time.

"Seniors may be more vulnerable to illness and so it's important we all take the necessary precautions to keep our most vulnerable people safe," Cr Kidd said.

"In many cases, this means limiting the amount of social contact older residents have with others.

"That's why Council has come up with this innovative way, with funding from the NSW government, to keep our seniors happy and healthy."

Orange City Council's services committee chair Scott Munro said the program includes a range of activities.

"The program is different every month," he said.

"It will include links to online video groups, arts and crafts and opportunities to interact with others."

Some of other the broad activities for seniors to participate in involve letter writing, model building, interactive exercises and sharing oral history.

Mr Munro added the kits have been developed to cater to the seniors in Orange.

"The activities can be accessed both with and without internet," he said.

"All instructions will be provided.

"Seniors can contact the project team if you need support with the kit."

Residents who are aged 65 and over, or 55 if Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander can participate in the Connect-a-Kit program.

Council will produce and assemble 100 kits and they encourage senior residents who are interested to receive the monthly program to get in early.

The tool hasn't been delivered yet but once finalised, it will be directly dispatched to the doors of the registered residents.
