Now a bridge is to be named after him.
Cabonne Council last week agreed to put on a public exhibition for 28 days its proposed name for a bridge on Eurimbla Road, Cumnock.
The council has received requests from the Cumnock and District Progress Association and Mr Montgomery's daughter, Carol Kerr, to name it Montgomery Bridge.
Council was told Mr Montgomery started worked with Molong Council in the early 1950s as a bridge ganger and continued with Cabonne Council.
"Mr Montgomery built and maintained many bridges and culverts within the shire during his long-term employment with the Council," a staff report said.
"Mr Montgomery died on the day he retired from Cabonne Council in 1981."
The bridge is 1.1 kilometres from Obley Street in Cumnock.
