The Reform Mine on the south side of the road operated from 1878 until 1897 when it closed following a miners' strike.
Remnants of the mine have remained on the hill and roadside but they now will be seen in a different light.
A $31,000 project to light up, and clean up, the site was completed on Wednesday night when newly-installed floodlights were switched on in a ceremony with Orange mayor Reg Kidd, the member for Orange Phil Donato and Nationals MLC Sam Farraway.
Apart from the lighting, woody weeds have cleaned away from around the structures.
Orange City Council has also applied for further funding to re-instate the mine's former winding shed which was damaged in a storm.
Cr Kidd said the lights complemented a similar project for the Wentworth Mine on the north side of the road.
"The two poppet head structures of both the Reform Mine and the Wentworth Mine dominate the Lucknow landscape at night," he said.
"To see both structures beautifully lit at night is really going to create a fantastic vista of the village for travellers on the highway."
They remain as intact reminders of the region's mining past.
