Rebecca Aylward, 27, of Mawson Road, Tregear, walked into the Orange shop with a man and child on March 1 with none of them carrying items.
However, eight minutes later she approached the returns counter carrying a number of items and produced a receipt from February 27.
The items, a five-piece cookware set, a leopard-print hand towel and a leopard-print bath towel, matched those listed on the receipt.
The return was considered valid and she was paid $65.50 in cash.
However, on March 11 police obtained a copy of CCTV footage that depicted the fraud and contacted Aylward who said she had no money at the time.
She was in hospital when magistrate Alexander Mijovich fined her $400 in Orange Local Court on Monday.
"It's the first matter of dishonesty I can see on her record," Mr Mijovich said.
