At 3pm the council announced the road would be closed, with an inspection to be conducted on Tuesday morning to determine if the road should be re-opened.
"The gates will be closed at 3pm following advice from the State Emergency Service that snowfalls are possible overnight and during the weekend," a statement released by council said.
"The boom gates will be closed as a precaution to help ensure motorists are not at risk of an accident or being stranded on the mountain overnight.
"[Council] will endeavour to open the roads should conditions allow it. However, if snow or ice make conditions dangerous, the boom gates on the access roads will remain closed."
Temperatures are expected to plummet this week as winter officially begins, while the city had recorded 2mm of rain on Monday afternoon as the mercury dropped to just four degrees.
Monday night is expected to drop to zero degrees, with snow and rain expected on Tuesday - which is expected to have a top of just six degrees.
