Orange Mayor Reg Kidd said the project will replace the underground pipes that supply residents with water.
"Council's water team will start work to replace the outdated underground water main," Cr Kidd said.
"The old pipes are made of cast iron and we're gradually replacing them across Orange. The program of installing new pipes is aimed at preventing the inconvenience caused when a main breaks."
Council's water crews will be gradually working along Icely Road from Cox Avenue to Autumn Street.
Workers will dig a trench, install a 150mm new PVC pipe before covering the trench again. The process is expected to take one day shift and council hopes that time frame will mean little to any interruptions for residents accessing their driveways during the day.
Orange City Council Infrastructure Committee chair, Cr Jeff Whitton said letters have been delivered to residents outlining the timetable for work.
Cr Whitton said during the replacement process there will be a period where the new pipes are filled with water and pressure tests conduced before new connections are made with households along the affected line.
"When that happens there will be short periods when each house will be without water. Again we'll be in touch with residents to give them plenty of notice," he added.
Weather permitting, the Icely Road project is expected to be completed by September.
