The wooden mallet was used to for removing cork stoppers from wooden kegs and was found under the building, which is one of the oldest brick buildings in Orange.
Hotelier Mark Murphy said was planning a bathroom renovation but after noticing some leakage and water it was discovered the problem came from under the building.
"We thought we had water coming down through the walls but when we started investigating it was coming through the subfloor," Mr Murphy said.
Mr Murphy said the problem was in the middle of the building but the perimeter remains structurally sound.
As a result of the work, the front bar has closed but Mr Murphy is opening an upstairs bar this week and re-introducing live music
Gym gets a makeover
While gyms have forced to close as a mitigation measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus, Integra Health and Fitness club has made the most of the closure.
Club manager Claire McMillan said plans for a renovation had been around for a while.
"We've had plans for a while and now we've had the time to do it, it's all happening," Miss McMillan said.
"Some of our staff have been really great and offered their time [to help]."
She said the work included building stages and knocking down walls and the gym is ready to welcome back members when it is allowed to.
Strata company moves offices
The sale of a building and the option for better street frontage has prompted the relocation of Absolute Strata Management.
The business is settling into its new Byng Street location after moving in March, just as coronavirus restrictions came into play.
Absolute Strata Management director and co-owner Cassie O'Connor said she worked from home initially and although the number of visitors is still restricted she has resumed working from the office.
"It's got great exposure for the signage ... business has certainly picked up since we've been here."
