However, with sporting activities banned and clubs only just making the first tentative steps towards resuming training, with games on Wade Park, Jack Brabham Park and more still a month or more away.

As such, sports grounds across the city have had their longest break between games in memory, and Orange City councillor Jason Hamling said the break had been a "great opportunity" for council grounds.

"The narrow window between summer sports and winter sports, is one of the big challenges that the Council's ground staff face every year," Cr Hamling said.

"This year, that window has been much longer.

"It would be the longest gap when these fields haven't seen sport for many years."

Over the past 12 to 18 months, grounds haven't been regularly watered due to the drought, but recent rain - combined with lack of sport - has given the surfaces the best chance possible to recover.

Wade Park is normally over-sown with rye grass and top-dressed between summer and winter seasons, but Cr Hamling said the grass had a "much better opportunity" to be established and a stronger root system, making it more resilient when sport continues.

Meanwhile, groundskeepers have been using a 'shockwave' machine at Jack Brabham Park - a machine towed behind a tractor which uses a series of blades to cut into soil and loosen roots of grass.

"The end result is a much healthier grass that stands up to the wear and tear that sport every week delivers," Cr Hamling said.

"We'll also be looking to re-turf the penalty areas in front of the football goals at Brabham."

He added council was working on sections of grass across Brabham where weeds had taken root, with the gap giving council a better chance to remove them to be in top shape when community sport is given the all-clear to resume.
