The 47-year-old was struck by a white van and sent sprawling to the kerb while returning to his parked car on Summer Street, near the corner of McNamara Street, just after 6.30pm on Monday.
The van was travelling west along Summer Street.
He spent Monday night in hospital with serious injuries, including a broken wrist, broken finger and severe lacerations to his palm, as well as bruising to his chest and potential broken ribs.
Several bystanders leapt to the main's aid before emergency services arrived on the scene, and he was taken to hospital overnight for observation.
Police appealed to the public for help in identifying the driver by releasing stills from CCTV cameras in the Orange CBD capturing the van.
Central West Police District Inspector Dave Harvey said both the man allegedly driving the vehicle and the van had been identified.
"The driver has been identified and he is assisting police with inquiries," Inspector Harvey said.
As of 4pm on Tuesday, Inspector Harvey said the man had not been charged and police were continuing to investigate the incident to determine what further action to take.
Police are still urging witnesses or those with dash cam footage to contact the Orange station on 6363 6399 or anonymously on Crime Stoppers by calling 1300 333 000.
