Mrs Rankin has opened a service providing free hot meals to people in need across the city from Fusion's kitchen at the back of the Anson Street church.

This Saturday night will make the fourth week of the kitchen, which runs from 5pm to 6pm and is completely free for those in need, and the numbers have jumped massively as word slowly filters out.

Mrs Rankin delivered a few meals to those she knew needed them on the first week and welcomed the first people to pick up takeaway from the kitchen two weeks ago.

The four people in week two became 22 customers last Saturday night, and Mrs Rankin said it proved there was a need to help Orange's most vulnerable on the onset of winter.

"A lot of organised places people go to for free or low-cost meals have been closed due to coronavirus and we wanted to help step into that space," she said.

The Vinnies food van and CWA Tuesday morning tea and Mustard Tree Cafe have all fallen victim to coronavirus, but she said the plan had been in the works for some time to fill a weekend gap in the city's food services.

"We saw a gap on weekends, and even with a lot of things closed due to coronavirus, FoodCare is still open on weekdays so there's no real hot food on weekends," she said.

The food is takeaway only for the time being, and while she initially only committed to running through May has seen the need to extend the kitchen to potentially run through winter.

"Last week demonstrated the need to extended, we don't know if it's permanently or just through the winter months but certainly while the COVID lockdown is in place," Mrs Rankin said.

She's also calling for people who are able to donate to the church - either donating time or produce - to get in contact on 6362 5788 to organise a drop-off or times to assist.

Fusion Orange is a not for profit which aims to improves the lives of young people and others in the community. It is located at the back of the Wesley Uniting Church at 217 Anson Street.
